Who We Are
The African Musicology Institute (AMI) is the first Africa-based institute fully dedicated to the rigorous scholarship and documentation of African and diaspora musics. We bridge the gap between indigenous epistemologies and modern digital innovation.
Core Ecosystem Pillars
- Virtual Museum: An immersive journey through Africa’s musical map.
- AI Knowledge System: Assistive technology for musicological research and pattern analysis.
- Global Media Hub: A multimedia platform amplifying African voices to a global audience.
Formalized through a historic MoU in September 2025, AMI represents a decisive moment for global scholarship. Led by visionaries Prof. Mellitus Wanyama (Kabarak) and Prof. Madimabe Geoff Mapaya (UNIVEN), we are reclaiming the narrative of African sound.
Vision Statement
"To create the world’s most comprehensive digital knowledge ecosystem for African music, connecting scholarship, artists, communities, and global audiences through immersive and interactive technologies."
Objectives
- Digitally Preserve traditional instruments, oral histories, and endangered repertoires.
- Develop AI Tools to support research while respecting Indigenous knowledge governance.
- Strengthen Creative Economies by providing entrepreneurial pathways for African artists.
