Strengthening Curriculum Delivery Through Competency-Based Education (CBE) Champions Training

A renewed focus on Competency-Based Education (CBE) is taking centre stage as academic staff designated as CBE Champions participate in a three-day intensive training aimed at strengthening curriculum implementation across the institution. Organized by the Directorate of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT), the programme brings together faculty members from various disciplines to deepen their capacity for effective CBE delivery in higher education, in alignment with national and global education reforms.

Running from 19 to 21 January 2026, the training is themed “Mastering CBE Practices in Higher Education: Equipping CBE Champions for Effective Curriculum Implementation.” The programme seeks to strengthen participants’ understanding of CBE philosophy, principles, and outcomes, while supporting the University’s transition from a Knowledge-Based Curriculum (KBC) to a Competency-Based Education framework.

Throughout the training, participants are engaging in a well-structured programme that covers key areas such as CBE competencies and values, learning outcomes design, constructive alignment, pedagogy, assessment, and mastery learning. Facilitated by experienced experts and University leaders, the sessions blend theory with hands-on practical workshops. These interactive engagements enable participants to redesign courses, develop competency-aligned rubrics, apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and explore digital tools that support effective competency-based teaching and assessment.

The training also addresses critical aspects of quality assurance, governance, moderation, and leadership in CBE implementation, preparing participants to serve as champions and change agents within their respective departments. Through collaborative activities, peer critique, and action planning, the programme aims to ensure a sustainable and consistent rollout of CBE across the University, with departmental action plans scheduled for implementation beginning May 2026. By investing in faculty capacity building, the University continues to strengthen its position as a leader in innovative, values-based higher education in Kenya and beyond.
