The 5th Central Rift Innovation Week (CRIW) 2026 opened at Kabarak University on Tuesday, 15 September, bringing together innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, industry players and other stakeholders for a day focused on turning ideas into viable enterprises and meaningful impact.
Held under the theme “Transforming Ideas into Impact: Innovating for a Better Tomorrow,” Day One focused on financing innovation, intellectual property, technology transfer and enterprise readiness, setting the stage for three days of knowledge exchange, collaboration and opportunities across the innovation ecosystem.
The programme opened with remarks from the Director of Research, Innovation and Outreach, Dr. Phillip Nyawere, who welcomed participants and set the tone for discussions around strengthening the pathway from ideas and research to practical solutions and enterprises.
A major focus of the day was access to finance and enterprise development. Participants explored cooperative financing models, youth and MSME credit access, institutional financing for student and staff enterprises, as well as pathways for moving research from the laboratory and classroom towards commercialisation.
The sessions also provided practical insights into intellectual property, technology transfer and commercialisation, with discussions covering patents, utility models, trademarks, industrial designs and freedom-to-operate considerations for innovators. Sessions on competitive research grants further highlighted funding opportunities, proposal development and compliance requirements.
Beyond presentations and training sessions, participants engaged through an innovation exhibition, youth forum and networking sessions. Discussions examined inclusive models for creative and technology startups, access to capital, trade finance, strategic partnerships and investment readiness.
While Day One focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge and valuable connections, Wednesday, 16 September, will mark the official opening of CRIW 2026, with Kabarak University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry K. Kiplangat scheduled to officially open the event.
As CRIW 2026 moves into its official opening, the message from Day One is clear: ideas need more than inspiration. They need knowledge, protection, financing, partnerships and the right ecosystem to translate into lasting impact.
