As part of Men’s Mental Health Month, the Kabarak University Health Sciences Students Association (KUHSSA) organized a peer talk at the KLAW 5 Lecture Hall, bringing students together for an honest conversation on mental health and emotional well-being.
The session was opened by Prof. Pamela Kimeto, Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, who encouraged students to take mental health conversations seriously and to create spaces where men feel comfortable seeking support when they need it. She also welcomed the guest speaker, noting the value of learning from professionals who work closely with mental health challenges every day.

Counselling psychologist Tom Nyarunda led the discussion under the theme, "Vulnerability is Strength." Speaking candidly to the students, he addressed the pressure many men face to appear strong at all times, often at the expense of their own well-being. He challenged the idea that asking for help is a sign of weakness, reminding participants that speaking up about struggles is often the first step toward healing and growth.

Mr. Nyarunda also shared practical ways students can take care of their mental health. He encouraged them to make time for reflection and prayer, pay attention to their daily habits, stay physically active, and take regular breaks from the constant flow of information and screen time. He explained how thoughts, emotions, and actions influence one another and why understanding that connection is important for managing stress and maintaining emotional balance.
The discussion also focused on looking out for friends and classmates who may be struggling. Students were encouraged to approach others with patience, listen without judgment, and offer support in ways that respect personal boundaries while building trust.

The forum provided a timely reminder that mental health is a shared responsibility and that meaningful conversations can make a real difference. Through initiatives such as this, Kabarak University continues to create opportunities for students to learn, connect, and develop the skills needed to navigate both academic life and personal challenges with confidence and resilience.
