Building Capacity for Faith Integration in Teaching and Learning Across Diverse Academic Contexts

A strong academic culture is not built by curriculum alone, but by the people who deliver it. With this in mind, Kabarak University brought together newly appointed academic staff from its Main Campus, City Campus, and TVET Institute for a focused training on faith-integrated teaching.

Organized by the Directorate of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT), the session focused on embedding Christian values in teaching, learning, and assessment, reflecting the University’s commitment to holistic education.

The training began with remarks from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, delivered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof. John Ochola. The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the new staff and highlighted that Kabarak’s vision and mission are guiding principles shaping teaching, research, and community engagement. Quoting scripture, he noted that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,” emphasizing the inseparable connection between faith and learning.

A key theme of the training was the expanded role of lecturers as mentors and character builders. Staff were encouraged to guide students not only academically but also ethically, helping them develop integrity, humility, stewardship, and service. Lecturers were challenged to see education as a transformative journey, inspiring students to view their careers as meaningful callings to serve God and society.

Facilitators also highlighted practical ways to integrate faith into disciplines, emphasizing intentionality and academic rigor. Faith is not limited to classroom references but should be embedded in teaching, research, and interactions with students.

The inclusion of staff from all campuses reflected Kabarak University’s unified approach to education and spiritual formation. Despite diverse disciplines and teaching environments, all participants shared a common goal: providing holistic, quality education grounded in Biblical Christian values.

Such initiatives ensure that as Kabarak University grows, its academic community remains aligned with its core values and mission, nurturing both knowledge and character in the next generation of leaders.
