The future of agriculture will be shaped not only in farms and laboratories, but through partnerships that bring together knowledge, innovation and shared purpose. That vision came into focus at Kabarak University as the institution welcomed a delegation from Nanjing Agricultural University, China, for high-level discussions on implementing a landmark partnership that will establish the China-Kenya Joint Laboratory for Agro-Livestock Product Processing.
The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, before holding discussions with the University's leadership on the next phase of the cooperation agreement signed between the two institutions. The visit marks a significant milestone in transforming the agreement into practical collaboration that will strengthen research, innovation and academic exchange between Kenya and China.
Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Kiplangat noted that the partnership extends far beyond the establishment of a research laboratory. He described it as a long-term platform that will bring together expertise from both universities to undertake collaborative research in agro-livestock product processing, intelligent processing technologies, nutrition evaluation, food quality and safety, and the development of new agricultural resources. The collaboration is also expected to promote technological innovation, talent development and the translation of research into practical solutions that address the needs of both countries.
The Vice-Chancellor observed that while Kenya is richly endowed with agricultural resources, post-harvest losses continue to limit the full value of agricultural production. By combining Nanjing Agricultural University's internationally recognised expertise in agricultural science and food processing with Kabarak University's strengths in nutrition, health sciences and community engagement, the partnership seeks to develop practical innovations that benefit farmers, industry and communities while contributing to national food security.
Beyond research, the joint laboratory is envisioned as a centre for academic excellence that will support postgraduate training, faculty and student exchange, technology transfer, entrepreneurship and product development. It will also strengthen collaboration in preserving indigenous foods, enhancing food safety and promoting sustainable food systems, creating lasting impact for both Kenya and China.
A highlight of the meeting was the recognition of four Kabarak University graduates who have been awarded Master's scholarships in Food and Nutrition by Nanjing Agricultural University. The beneficiaries, Ms. Charity Naipasoi, Mr. Victry Mugaliza, Mr. Rodney Kipruto and Ms. Victoria Nyabuto, represent one of the first tangible outcomes of the growing partnership and reflect the shared commitment of both institutions to nurturing the next generation of researchers and innovators.
As the delegation toured the University's facilities, discussions focused not only on existing capacities but also on the possibilities that lie ahead.
