A new environment calls for new habits, and for Kabarak University’s first-year students, the transition into university life is a chance to leave behind familiar routines and deliberately shape a new path. This was the message from Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry K. Kiplangat as he addressed the September 2026 intake.
Addressing the freshmen at the University Main Auditorium, Prof. Kiplangat encouraged the students to view their transition to university as an opportunity to move beyond the routines, habits and expectations of their previous environment and begin deliberately shaping their own path.
Drawing inspiration from The Wild Robot, the Vice-Chancellor urged the students to “overwrite their default settings”, reminding them that university life requires new habits, greater independence and personal responsibility. He challenged the students to make deliberate choices about how they spend their time, the people they associate with and the values they develop.
Prof. Kiplangat also reminded the students that Kabarak University was founded with a clear purpose and continues to provide education from a Biblical perspective. He encouraged them to live out the University's values of integrity, professionalism, patriotism, mindfulness of others, and innovativeness, not simply as principles taught in class, but as qualities demonstrated in their everyday lives.
The Vice-Chancellor further challenged the freshmen to think beyond academic qualifications and consider the problems they hope to solve in society. Drawing inspiration from stories of young people who have developed solutions despite difficult circumstances, he encouraged the students to recognise that meaningful ideas and innovations can begin wherever they are.
“Start building your future now,” Prof. Kiplangat urged the students, encouraging them not to wait for a particular age or stage in life before pursuing their ambitions. He called on them to read widely, develop practical skills, pursue their ideas and look for opportunities to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
He also encouraged the students to approach their university experience with academic integrity, responsible living, strong relationships and faith. He assured them that Kabarak University would support them throughout their journey and welcomed them into the Kabarak University family.
Prof. Kiplangat concluded by blessing the students with the words of Numbers 6:24-26.
As the new students begin their Kabarak journey, the Vice-Chancellor’s message offered a reminder that university life extends beyond the classroom. The freshmen were encouraged to intentionally shape the people they are becoming through purpose, discipline, faith, learning, and service, while preparing themselves not only for successful careers but also for meaningful contributions to society.
